Scored for 4 trumpets, 4 horns in F, 3 trombones, tuba, and 2 pianos.

In three movements. It opens with a concise and lively Intrada, which features fugal writing for all instruments. The second movement is a monumental Adagio starting off with just the two pianos and building to a climax with all the instruments, then ending with muted trumpets and pianos. A tone-poem based on the Luke 24:13-35 narrative on the disciples' walk to Emmaus and their encounter with the risen Lord enroute. The slow opening section gives way to a rousing fugue celebrating the newfound joy of the disciples in seeing Jesus Christ again and running back to Jerusalem to tell the good news.
